My Big Break on HBO's
Bad Boys of Comedy
By Bobo Lamb
As I sit here early Saturday morning with my
material in front of me, I still feel like my
career is just beginning after ten years of
performing in bars that have been converted
into comedy venues, from dealing with
promoters who have no idea of the structure of
a comedy show and being put onstage after
the audience has seen enough to being
overlooked by
Def Comedy Jam.

Five Best of Comic View seasons later,
opportunity knocks when
P. Diddy Presents The
Bad Boys of Comedy
is scouting for talent.
I'm proud to say Bad Boy Management saw me perform and win the National Bacardi
Lights Comedy Competition headlined by Cedric the Entertainer at the Pantages
Theater in Hollywood. I received a standing ovation like Young Jeezy that's hip hop. I
won the $5000 competition after advancing to the finals in Detroit.

It sparked a national tour, in which I hosted the show in 18 cities headlined by Don
“D.C.” Curry, John Witherspoon, Mike Epps, Sheryl Underwood, Mark Curry and Rickey
Smiley.

When the auditions came for
Bad Boys of Comedy, I received a call saying I didn't have
to audition. I had a reserved spot on the show and that someone from the Bad Boys
camp really enjoyed my performance from the competition.

Bad Boys sent a contract that frightened comics away. The contract contained many
stipulations but I realized that it was just Bad Boys protecting itself. The pay wasn't very
much, but they took good care of me. They flew me in to New York City, provided great
hotel accommodations, a choice of some Sean Jean clothing and a per diem. The
venue was excellent. It was a blessing to be given an opportunity for exposure. I'm
thankful to have been a part of it. I headlined the third episode and my set was
hilarious.

As a writer and comic, it was a golden opportunity. Not only do I perform stand-up
across the country, I also write screenplays. I'm working on a movie that I wrote called
The Last Black Vampire, about a funny vampire who bites only gold diggers. Also, I have
been approached by a good friend, Kevin Hart, star of the movie
Soul Plane to write
some treatments for him for stand-up. Brandon T. Jackson, who stars in new movie,
Roll Bounce with Lil' Bow Wow, also contacted me to write stand-up material.

The Bad Boys of Comedy was a great experience for me. You can't put a price on that
kind of exposure. I'm very thankful to Diddy, who treated me well. I'm looking forward
to showing the whole world how Jesus has blessed me with talent.

I also perform for churches and fundraisers across the country so never judge a book
by its cover. Thanks for the exposure in this great magazine and thanks to
Bad Boys of
Comedy
and HBO.
