Invite Them Up is a weekly comedy show at Rififi/Cinema
Classics, a bar and nightclub in the East Village. The bar has a
comfortable atmosphere and talkative patrons and the
performance space is intimate with decent seating and a large
versatile stage. Show up fifteen minutes early for the 8:30PM
show and expect a crowd, as local comics often share the bill with
larger acts that have appeared on
Late Night with Conan
O’Brien
and The Daily Show.
Eugene Mirman
Comedian Eugene Mirman produces and co-hosts the weekly
event with friend and fellow comic
Bobby Tisdale. Tisdale is
quite at home on the Rififi stage and quickly made it known
that the evening’s performers would not be at all afraid to
interact with the crowd. Tisdale is all personality and his
comedy is as much a physical performance as it is stand-up.
He hilariously got the crowd to root for him as he repeatedly
attempted to blow a fireball with a shot of 151 after attempting
to teach an audience member to do the same.
Bobby Tisdale
The night’s performers included comedians Tracy Jayne, Patrick Borelli, and Demetri
Martin
along with musical act The Defibulators. The most memorable was Martin, who
annihilated the audience with a combination of dry sarcastic wit and a series of bizarre
observations.

The most enticing point about Wednesday at Rififi, however, is getting to see Mirman
perform live. Mirman is at home on the Rififi stage and was able to incite vicious bouts
of laughter before he even had to go into his regular material.  His eclectic style does
not rely on a single gimmick or mode of communication with the audience.

Mirman may be observational in his approach, or he may get rather silly. He may
simply tell a hilarious story or even re-play the audio of a phone conversation between
himself and his bank. Mirman recounted experiences from his time in Scotland and
proclaimed himself a Scotland expert inviting the audience to ask him anything about
the country where everyone is a pirate.
